Learning Aikido

Martial arts have always been very popular in the United States and one of the more popular ones recently is Aikido. One great example of Aikido is the actor Steven Seagal, who practices this type of martial art. His movies alone are one of the reasons that it has become so popular. However, Aikido has actually been around for a very long time and has a very interesting history and dates all the way back to the 1940s in Japan.

The founder of Aikido is Morihei Ueshiba and he was born on December 14, 1883. He grew up in modern Japan and had witnessed how thugs would vandalize and terrorize his father regularly. As time went on Morihei decided that he was going to become as possible and seek revenge against all the thugs that terrorized his father. While training he was able to receive many certificates of achievement. He held multiple certificates in jujitsu, spear fighting, and fencing. However, as accomplished and impressed as he was with his abilities, he was still not happy with his skills. He began to realize there was more to the martial arts and started to explore religion. Through religion he was hoping to find a greater meaning in life, while still pursuing and practicing martial arts.

He developed Aikido by actually combining the martial arts with religion. He took his martial arts training and his religious beliefs and applied them to each other. This style was originally known as Aikibudo, but by 1942 he changed the name to Aikido. Aikido is very different than other martial art because it actually combines many different styles together; they are jujitsu, aiki-jujitsu, spear fighting, and sword fighting.

Interestingly, Aikido is often thought of as the ultimate martial art. However, it is based on religion and harmony with one's self. Aikido actually uses joint locks, weight manipulation, and different throws that achieve the purpose. It is very effective and this was the intention of Morihei from the very beginning. The many techniques used in Aikido is the result if Morihei's creative combination.
